Rapid Data Robbery »15 October 200910/11/20098

I contacted Daniel Evans from Rapid Data and was quoted between £97 and £150 to recover approx 120Gb of data from a hard drive with a mechanical fault. Thinking this was a good price I sent the HD off and phoned four days later for an update.
I was told that the engineers were unable to find any data on the HD and that they suspected the PCB on the back. To try another recovery they would have to replace the PCB at a cost of £195, due to the part being ordered from America.
I called Daniel four times over the following week and eventually was told that they had received the new PCB, installed it and tried to recover the information. I was told they were only able to get 2% of the data back before the second PCB broke down, and that the data recovered was all corrupt.

At this point I told Daniel that I was not prepared to pay any more money for further repair attempts, and asked him to return my hard drive. He told me it would be returned in that evening's post, but four days later I had to call again. The UPS tracking number he gave me was incorrect, and I had to call him 3 times to remind him to contact UPS and find my HD.

Eventually I told Daniel that I was considering legal action as I felt he had lost my hard drive. he called me that evening to say he had found it and re-sent it. It arrived the following day, and there is no evidence of any work having been done to the hard drive.

I  have since scanned the internet (which I wish I had done first) and found that many people have had the same problem.

Data Recovery Scam »16/08/0928/08/20091

I was advised on first contact with this company that my hard disk had a relatively minor fault in that the firmware was corrupt and that probably it would cost me the advertised cost of £97 to repair.

I sent the disk the same day for repair. I received an email on the 17th August stating that they had done some work but it was unsuccesful and that the whole disk would have to be forensically scanned and that only their sister company Fields  Data Recovery had the facilities to do this. It would cost me £195 + vat if I wished to proceed. And that the process would take 2-4 days.

I paid this via credit card. I have since then not received the disk back. Attempts at communication have been unsucessful, email, phone or website.

I  have since scanned the internet (wish I had done this first) and found that many people have suffered the same fate.

This company is most likely scamming the public. They probably do not do anything at all. They also do not return disks, which is even more frustrating than the money scam.

All email correspondence and web evidence is available in the Files section.

It is much more important that I get my disk back. And wonder if this is a criminal act to retain disks (theft).

Scammed by Rapid Data Recovery AKA Fields Data Recovery »24/04/200908/11/20091

DETAILS OF CLAIM
I sent a faulty hard drive to a data recovery company called Rapid-data.net seemingly based in 100 Pall Mall, St James, a very exclusive district of London, who advertised a "no recovery no fee" service. I filled in a form and stated clearly that I wanted "my documents" and "scanned documents" recovered from my drive. They examined my hard drive and sent me a report on the 24th April 2009 (attached) clearly stating that they had made an image of the drive, but needed to send the image to their forensic data recovery partners Fields Data Recovery stated an 80% chance of recovering my data, and that the job would take 2-4 days.

I paid the fee they requested on the 28th April 2009. Over two weeks later on the 14th of May 2009 I received my hard drive in a plain box with no explanation. I called their office in Pall Mall and they directed me to another office in Bridgend, Wales. I was told that they could not recover the data and nothing more. They did not elaborate as to why exactly the recovery did not succeed in spite of their over-optimistic claims. No report was sent to me.

I complained verbally and in writing, asking to speak to their "partners" Fields Data who claimed ignorance. I noticed that Fields Data were based in exactly the same office as Rapid Data - who in turn claimed to be based at 100 Pall Mall!

I became suspicious and sent my hard drive to a professional accredited data recovery expert for verification. They reported to me that the drive had been opened and that damage was caused by incompetent handling and that some magnets were missing! The report sent to me by Rapid Data was deliberately misleading in that it claimed my hard drive was virtually fixed, simply in order to extract payment from me. Their pricing structure was dishonest; the initial low price of £97 was simply used to draw me in.

I reported the company to Bridgend Trading Standards office, who investigated without any satisfactory conclusion due to Rapid Data's refusal to cooperate. Their only response was to send Trading Standards a photograph of a hard drive claiming it was mine.

By speaking to several data recovery companies I discovered that there were many complaints made against Rapid Data and their parent company Fields Data Recovery, about sharp practice and negligent damage to data and equipment. Searching on the internet I found dozens of complaints against the company. I contacted other victims and discovered that their experiences corresponded more or less to my own. Rapid Data refuse to communicate and even when they did they simply hid behind the mantra of "no refunds" or "read the small print".

and a number of other companies which have nothing to do with IT or data recovery, like http://www.sugar-daddy.net, a quasi pimping operation. If we are talking about integrity, what should we make of a man who bought his degree, has offices in Dubai, claims to be an authority in fields as disparate as divorce, employment tribunals, "romantic introductions" and of course his numerous data recovery companies, one of which states that their office is in the Pall Mall but you can NEVER find any of their technical staff there. I suspect that address is a front, staffed by a girl with recorded sounds of activity playing in the background when unsuspecting victims call to ask about their hard drives.

Data Recovery Scammers based in Bridgend »02/12/201011/02/20110
What a nightmare, I should have Googled this well-known fraudulent company run apparently by two guys called Jamie and Daryl Wallis, Welsh scammers who are into everything from online divorces, visa applications, debt management and of course data recovery.

Sent in a failed hard drive containing 3 years of highly valued photos. Customer service veered between abysmal and non-existent, they tried to charge me 4 times the original quoted price, and when I received my hard drive back (seemingly one of the few customers to receive it back at all) it was further damaged beyond repair, including having been physically wrenched apart and suffering from dust contamination - now zero chance of recovering my photos. I kick myself harder for sending my drive to Rapid Data Recovery/Fields without researching them first than I do for dropping my hard drive in the first place.

It's a con, it claims to be better than all the other software it lists and yet it clearly is not.

There are two sites and both claim a Money Back guarantee but the terms and conditions say they do not make refunds yet UK sales law says 7 day refund should be offered, but trying to get through to their customer services manager via the Bridgend call centre is impossible.

Have been told there a hundreds of victims who have had similar problems.

Has anyone been able to get a refund from Rapid Data ?

Hand delivered my external harddrive for data recovery to Rapid Data Recovery. After a couple of weeks of not being able to get through to anybody at the company for some reason, I finally got through to somebody. Despite their promises for a No Data No Fee service, they insisted on a £195 non refundable fee to repair the drive so data can be recovered. Quoted a 65-75% chance of recovering 100% of data. A few days later, surprise surprise, they have been unable to recover any data. Fail to send me an invoice for over two weeks and when it comes through, actual charge is £230 as they have added VAT on and as far as I am concerned I was not aware at the time.

Staple Poor Customer Service »03/10/201019/03/20100
I took my computer to Staples/Easy tech for some virus removal and was told that I'd be better off buying one of their new computers. Not knowing better I did purchase one that was on sale. And I needed them to transfer my files from my old computer to the new one. They said that they could have it done in 3 days and I could pick them back up at that time. I returned in 3 days and the new pc they had sold me was also sold to someone else by accident. I was a bit miffed but I understand mistakes happen sometimes. I then asked about my old computer they were supposed to transfer my files from. And guess what.. they were unable to locate it as well. I asked to speak to his manager and he promptly located her and brought her over. She apologized and asked if I'd mind calling her tomorrow and she'd have an answer for me at that time. I proceed to ask her for my money back for the purchased computer and I would only be interested at this point of getting my old computer back and nothing more. I returned the next day to find my old computer back but I noticed it was missing random screws from the tower itself and when I attempted to start it up nothing turned on! I then started looking for a reputable service that would help me with this non working computer. I eventually sent my computer to a service called secureremotesupport.com. I was called a couple of days later and was told that the computers power supply was not plugged into something he called a motherboard. They were able to salvage and reassemble my computer, swept it for virus' and sped it up. And it didn't cause me to have to purchase a new computer.

Bait & Switch »03/236/201001/04/20100

Over spring break last year I took my laptop computer with me on vacation. In retrospect this was probably a poor decision. From Airport Security man handling it, to it being a losing contestant in bumper cars in the overhead compartment, to my normal abuse of it. Somewhere along that route my display screen got cracked. Not exactly a good thing and even worse for a college student with an unhealthy addiction of facebook and video games. When I arrived home from vacation I went in search of a company that would be able to repair it both within my poor, broke, college student budget and provide some sort of warranty. In my searching a company that kept popping up was Staples Easy Tech. I took it into their local location and chatted up the technicians there. The conversation covered their prices, warranties, and of course the upsell. The price appeared to be much higher than when I had spoken to them on the phone and they kept pestering me to purchase a NEW machine. Being a broke college student I couldn’t afford to ‘just purchase a new one.’ So I took my broken computer home with me. After a few days of the broken machine just sitting there, and a few days of me borrowing a friends laptop I started my quest again for a fix to my issue. I came across a company called secureremotesupport.com. They offered to have a tech come out and fix it, or to send it in with a 24 hour turnaround time. I chose to have it repaired in shop (price break if I sent it in.) It was back to me within 4 days with a new screen, and it was all cleaned up. There also used to be an annoying fan noise that had quit whirring also. Im very pleased that Secure Remote Support received my business and am glad that Easy Tech pushed me towards another company to repair my ailing laptop. I won’t be considering Easy Tech again and am very unhappy with the experience.

Datatrack Labs »Dec 201221/01/20130
I sent in my external hard drive to Datatrack Labs to have the data recovered. The hard drive was dropped (a short distance) and was making a clicking noise. Datatracks assured me at least 50% of the files that were extracted would be usable. What they didn't explain was that they weren't able to even extract or recover the majority of the files! Not a single one of the video files was usable (they were all corrupt) and multiple folders that originally contained hundreds of photos were completely empty. They delivered the data on a poor quality hard drive that they charged £75 for. They were a week late on their promised delivery date. And multiple times my emails were ignored and questions unanswered. All in all it was a complete waste of £500 and the service was awful.
